Up for sale is "The Horsehead Inn" a handmade early 20th century Deluxe Mystery Doll House. The term "Mystery House" was coined by dollhouse historian Flora Gill Jacobs, to described dollhouses with unknown origins, many of which were handmade.
This was the first time we ever heard the term when we bought this doll house from her at The Washington Dolls' House Museum Shop in 1991. The custom house was built intending to resemble or be a replica of a the typical home with basement, attic dormers and porch. As nice as an architectural model, as pretty as homebuilder's craftsman sample house Expertly executed, it was designed in a Pennsylvania Dutch Farm House Cottage style.
When and where was it built? Central Pennsylvania circa 1920's.Was everything done by hand? Everything lovingly hand-done probably by craftsmen using old tools. All wood, no plywood with an old wood shake shingle roof, each cut by hand, more than 500 shingles used on the roof, the siding is a wood clapboard type. The Wrap-around Covered Porch with pillars and wooden railing, 2 Bay windows.
All windows have Original glass and both Front and Side Doors are Wooden and open & close. YES, everything shown in photo. No, it structurally stable and aligned Any Damage? Some of the wood shingles on the leading edge of the porch are dented and characteristically knicked, otherwise None.
No, designed closed and roof not removable. Has original interior lace curtains still in place after all these years. The Washington Dolls' House Museum Shop, 1991.
